BCSN Erie Scholar of the Year

The BCSN Scholarship Fund of the Erie County Community Foundation is pleased to offer the Scholar of the Month and Scholar of the Year Scholarship, available to college bound seniors who will be attending an accredited school of higher education in the United States beginning in the Fall of 2023.  All high school seniors who wish to apply attending Edison, Huron, Margaretta, Perkins, Sandusky or Sandusky St. Mary’s Central Catholic high schools can apply.   The application must be completed online and the deadline is October 10 at 11:59PM.  No paper applications will be considered.

Each month, November through May, a Scholar of the Month will be selected from among high schools in the Buckeye Broadband Sandusky service area.   In May, one renewable scholarship – worth a minimum of $8,000 over four years – will be awarded annually to the Scholar of the Year, selected from among the seven Scholars of the Month.  The first year’s award will be $2,000. The scholarship is renewable for up to an additional three years (of $2,000 each year) provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA, full-time status and applies for the renewal.  The scholarship may be used toward tuition, books and fees. Awards will be adjusted as needed for students who are obtaining a degree that requires less than four years.

Each Scholar of the Month will qualify for a minimum of a $1,000, one-time scholarship. This will not be included in the Scholar of the Year scholarship, whose award is separate. Monthly, BCSN will film a 30-second vignette of each Scholar of the Month. This vignette will feature a “day in the life” of the student and will be aired on Buckeye Broadband channels regularly during the month for which the student was selected.

The Criteria used for selection of Scholar of the Month and Scholar of the Year includes consideration of the following:

  1. Scholastic aptitude and prior academic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or above), as demonstrated by your transcript;
  2. Individual motivation, ability and potential, as demonstrated by your essay and, if selected as a Scholar of the Year finalist, an interview with Erie County Community Foundation’s Scholarship Advisory Committee is also required;
  3. Two signed letters of recommendations from high school teachers, guidance counselors, principal and/or employer;
  4. Financial need;
  5. Extra-curricular activities such as athletics, clubs, internships, work/study programs.
